Rockmart Journal The Rockmart Journal, distributed to 3, 400 households each Wednesday, is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Rockmart, Ga. It is located at 238 S. Piedmont Ave., Rockmart, in a growing area centered between Cartersville, Cedartown and Rome. The Rockmart Journal features "local news" to subscribers who acknowledge the value of "small town" atmosphere. The first issue of The Rockmart Journal was published in July, 1930 and was located on East Elm Street in a building that later housed Economy Ice Cream Co It was founded by Fred Fitzgerald along with his father-in-law, A. N. Johnson, Piedmont, Ala. He continued as publisher until 1939 when he was succeeded by H. F. Beall and later Cecil D. Franklin, who acquired the newspaper in the early 1940s. Later, E. C. Sanders became a silent partner in 1946 and acquired remaining interest from Hirman Brown, Cartersville. Sanders became publisher in 1948 and moved location of the business to South Marble Street. The Rockmart Journal was acquired by News Publishing Company in 1980 and was located on South Piedmont Avenue. In 1998, the newspaper was moved into a modern building at 238 S. Piedmont Ave. The editor at that time was the late Aubrey "Orbie" Thaxton. Today, it is a part of News Publishing Company, Burgett Mooney, owner. Lowell Vickers is the current editor/publisher. Cedartown Standard The Cedartown Standard is a bi-weekly publication covering the news and events in and around Cedartown and Polk County, Ga. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Standard is home-delivered to 3, 900 households in Cedartown and the surrounding area. Having began in 1869, the Standard is the oldest, continuously published paper in Polk County. Together with their sister publications, the Standard produces three special sections each year, including Polk County Pigskin Preview, published in August ; the award-winning Past Times Magazine, also published in August and February's annual Polk County Review and Forecast. In addition to these sections, the Standard also produces a special issue each year honoring our local high school and college graduates. We currently have a staff of five employees and our office is under the direction of Editor Aimee L. Harmison. The Standard office is located in the notable Coca-Cola building on downtown Main Street, right in the heart of the city's historic district. Since our early roots back in the 1800s, the Standard continues to grow and meet the information needs of our readers. We're a community-centered newspaper and we've remained throughout the times because of the loyalty of our readers and the leadership of our parent company, News Publishing Company.
