X-rays
Depending upon your child’s level of cooperation, often a cleaning will occur along with dental x-rays if necessary or appropriate. Our goal with the first visit is to start the process of acquainting you and your child with our office. We will provide you with as much information as possible regarding your child’s current dental health, growth and development as well as our recommendations to achieve optimal dental health.

Fluoride Treatment
You will need to replace your toothbrush more often due to your appliances. As soon as the bristles start to wear down or fray, replace your toothbrush with a new one. It may be difficult for your toothbrush to reach some areas under your archwire. Do not swallow any toothpaste; rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after you finish brushing. It is important to floss and use an antibacterial mouthwash and fluoride treatment throughout your orthodontic treatment and beyond for optimal oral hygiene.
Dental Sealants
A sealant is a protective coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces (grooves) of the back teeth (premolars and molars), where four out of five cavities in children are found. This sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth: If possible, find the tooth. Handle it by the crown, not by the root. You may rinse the tooth with water only. DO NOT clean with soap, scrub or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a gauze or clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk, NOT water. If the patient is old enough, the tooth may also be carried in the patient’s mouth (beside the cheek). The patient must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Pulpotomy
A vital pulpotomy is a single-stage procedure in which a pediatric dentist surgically removes the infected portion of the baby tooth nerve. This infection results from bacteria in a deep cavity “eating” its way through the outer tooth and coming into contact with the sterile “inner tooth nerve”. If allowed to develop, bacteria will infect an entire tooth rendering it non-restorable. Eventually this “cavity bacteria” will tunnel out of the tooth, through the jaw, and infect the face. At this point the infection becomes life threatening and patients require I.V. antibiotics and hospitalization to resolve the infection. The baby tooth will then have to be removed prematurely resulting in abnormal jaw and adult tooth development. The pulpotomy is therefore done as a means of eliminating tooth decay and preserving the vitality and function of the remaining tooth nerve. Caustic chemicals such as formaldehyde are typically used to disinfect the infected pulp once the cavity was removed. The laser option eliminates the need for this dated approach by vaporizing only infected pulp tissue and leaving behind healthy pulp. The baby tooth is then capped with a “tooth hat”, commonly referred to as a crown, which eventually falls out with the baby tooth when an adult tooth is ready to replace it. It’s as if the cavity never happened.
Root Canal Treatment
A pulpectomy is required when the entire pulp is involved (into the root canal(s) of the tooth). During this treatment, the diseased pulp tissue is completely removed from both the crown and root. The canals are cleansed, disinfected and, in the case of primary teeth, filled with a resorbable material. Then, a final restoration is placed. A permanent tooth would be filled with a non-resorbing material.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
There are many options for treatment depending on the patient's age and thickness of the frenum / hypertrophic gingiva. Outdated methods involve excising or snipping the tissue with a scalpel or sharp scissors after a local anesthetic is administered. For the frenectomy procedure, dissolvable stitches are used to close the surgical site.

Orthodontics
We see parents every day who are confused as to when their child should begin orthodontic treatment. Although the recommendation is that children be evaluated orthodontically at age 7, that does not mean that treatment should necessarily begin at that age. Although there may be tremendous differences between offices as to when orthodontics should begin or as to whether orthodontics is needed at all, following are some common sense guidelines developed over 25 years of practice of Pediatric Dentistry that we follow here at Cedar Park Pediatric Dentistry that may be helpful.
Braces
Crossbites - As a general rule, all crossbites should be treated early (Age 5-8). A crossbite is when either the front or back teeth hit opposite the way they normally would (crossed). Back crossbites are usually treated with an expander, front crossbites are usually treated with partial braces.
