Dental Examination
X-rays
Your first visit will begin with a consultation and examination by Dr. Shillingburg. During your appointment, Dr. Shillingburg will take panoramic X-rays of your mouth to examine your teeth, bones, and overall oral structure. After this, he will explain his findings and recommend how to move forward. Dr. Shillingburg will thoroughly explain everything, so you understand what your procedure will involve. Depending on your situation, he may consult with your general dentist to coordinate your treatment.

Crowns
A dental bridge is a type of treatment we use to replace one or more missing teeth. A traditional bridge consists of one prosthetic tooth and two supporting crowns. The two anchor crowns are permanently attached to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. They hold the prosthetic tooth in place and provide support while eating. Together, these three components “bridge” the space left by a missing tooth. We can use this same process to replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row.
Bridges
Dental bridges are an excellent solution for those who have missing teeth. High-quality bridges can replace several teeth in a row while restoring the bite’s strength and functionality. At DFW Oral Surgeons, we can use implant-supported bridges to beautifully restore your smile.

Root Canal Treatment
Your general dentist should be able to treat the most common types of oral health problems. However, when you need a complicated or restorative surgery, your dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon instead.

Deep Cleaning

Dentures
Traditional dentures are held in place with either a special dental glue or by using the suction between the gums and denture base. Unfortunately, they are often unreliable and tend to shift and move out of place. This movement can make everyday actions such as speaking and eating difficult.
Overdentures
At DFW Oral Surgeons, we offer two main types of dentures – fixed implant-supported dentures and overdentures. Both types are functional and natural-looking, though their care requirements differ slightly.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
If the problem progresses, oral surgery may be necessary to repair the joints. This procedure may involve adjusting the jawbone’s positioning, removing small amounts of inflamed tissue, or replacing the joint altogether. Dr. Shillingburg or Dr. Castillo will use X-ray and CT scan technology to pinpoint the cause of your pain and make a treatment plan.
Jaw Surgery
Dr. Shillingburg earned his advanced degree in oral surgery from Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, then received certification from, and is a diplomate of, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2007. He is trained and credentialed in dentoalveolar surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, dental implant surgery, orthognathic surgery, facial reconstructive oral surgery, and dental anesthesiology.
Maxillofacial Surgery
During his undergraduate studies at Lubbock Christian University, Dr. Castillo completed prerequisites for dental school. In 2011, he was accepted to Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. As a dental student, Dr. Castillo was fascinated with Oral and Maxillofacial surgery after shadowing a very complex facial reconstruction procedure. A dual degree program was offered to Dr. Castillo through the University of Missouri-Kansas City as one of two residents selected.
Tooth Extractions
Although we always try our best to save and preserve your natural teeth, sometimes there is no other option than to remove a tooth. This procedure can help maintain the health of your gums, bones, and surrounding teeth. Because we have been trusted by decades of patients to provide safe, reliable tooth extractions, you can rest assured you are in good hands.
Ridge Augmentation
Dental implants are by far the most effective way to replace missing teeth. Implants provide a level of stability and functionality that other replacement methods cannot replicate. Unfortunately, not everyone is healthy enough for dental implants. If the bone ridge along the upper and lower dental arch has become damaged or decayed, you may need to undergo a ridge augmentation or expansion procedure before receiving implants.
Bone Grafting
We recommend bone grafting as a way to restore weak and disfigured bones. We most commonly use this method during implant procedures. Because dental implants are attached directly to the jaw, your bone needs to be strong enough to support a new tooth. If your jawbone is too weak or small, your implant’s titanium screw may not merge with it, and you could lose your implant.

Orthodontics
Orthodontic surgery is often needed to correct jaw damage, impacted teeth, and very misaligned teeth. Our team at DFW Oral Surgeons has specialized in these kinds of operations for more than three decades. With advanced orthodontics, Dr. Shillingburg and his staff can drastically improve your teeth and jaws’ appearance and functionality.
Braces
We recommend orthodontic surgery when there is no other alternative available. For instance, we would not operate on someone with mildly crooked teeth. Traditional options such as braces, retainers, and aligners are better for patients such as these. If traditional treatments have not worked for you in the past, or if your teeth and jaw are severely misaligned, you may be a candidate for this procedure.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Our services include implant placements, facial and oral reconstruction, oral pathology, TMJ therapy, cosmetic dentistry, and a variety of others. John C. Shillingburg, DDS, is proud to be a native Texan. After graduating from Texas A&M with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science and from the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio with a doctorate degree in dental science, Dr. Shillingburg completed a general dentistry residency at Fort Carson in Colorado.
