It is important to determine whether all the adult teeth are present or if some adult teeth missing.

Every dental implant solution is comprised of three parts; the fixture, the abutment and the crown. The fixture and the abutment are the most critical. The fixture is the anchor that is embedded in the jaw bone; the root. The abutment screws into the fixture and creates the base for the crown to be attached. The abutment holds the crown in place. Bridges
There are several reasons: A dental bridge can sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge the space of the missing tooth/teeth. In addition, removing a denture or a partial at night may be inconvenient, not to mention dentures that slip can be uncomfortable and rather embarrassing.

Dentures
A small amount of bleeding is to be expected following the operation. If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply biting pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, bite on a moistened black tea bag for thirty minutes. The tannic acid in the black tea helps to form a clot by contracting blood vessels. If bleeding occurs, avoid hot liquids, exercise, and elevate the head. If bleeding persists, call our office immediately. Do not remove the immediate denture unless the bleeding is severe. Expect some oozing around the side of the denture.
Overdentures

Oral Surgery

Jaw Surgery
In more complex cases, the bones of the upper and lower jaw may be repositioned to increase the size of the airway (orthognathic surgery). This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires a one to two day overnight stay in the hospital.
Gum Surgery
Shortly after surgery (1-14 days) the patient will return to the orthodontist. A rubber band will be attached to the chain to put a light eruptive pulling force on the impacted tooth. This will begin the process of moving the tooth into its proper place in the dental arch. This is a carefully controlled, slow process that may take up to a full year to complete. Remember, the goal is to erupt the impacted tooth and not to extract it. Once the tooth has moved into the arch in its final position, the gum around it will be evaluated to make sure it is sufficiently strong and healthy to last for a lifetime of chewing and tooth brushing. In some circumstances, especially those where the tooth had to be moved a long distance, there may be some minor gum surgery required to add bulk to the gum tissue over the relocated tooth so that it remains healthy during normal function. Your dentist or orthodontist will explain this procedure to you if it applies to your specific situation.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Daniel J. Smith, D.M.D., was born and raised in western Lehigh Valley near Allentown, Pennsylvania. He graduated with honors from Kutztown University with a B.S. in Biology and received a Doctorate in Dental Medicine degree from Temple University with high honors in 2010. Dr. Smith then received a commission of Captain in the U.S. Air Force where he completed a residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the military?s only level 1 trauma center; San Antonio Military Medical Center. Dr. Smith finished his military commitment as an attending at Walter Reed Military Medical Center, Bethesda MD, with the rank of Major. He has been distinguished in his service and received the Meritorious Service Medal in 2018. Dr. Smith is continuing to serve his country as a member of the Dover Air Force Base reserve unit. Dr. Smith is a diplomate of the Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and belongs to a number of organizations: American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, Pennsylvania Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Mid-Atlantic Society of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association and the Pennsylvania Dental Association.
Tooth Extractions
After tooth extraction, its important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times to staunch the flow of blood.
Ridge Augmentation
A ridge augmentation procedure is typically performed in Dr. Myers, Dr. Currie, Dr. Smith or Dr. Aryas office under local anesthesia. Some patients may also request sedative medication.

Orthodontics
Corrective jaw surgery (known to professionals as orthognathic surgery) is needed when the top and bottom jaws don’t meet correctly and/or teeth don’t adequately fit within the jaw. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and corrective jaw surgery repositions a misaligned jaw. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.
Braces
This exam is usually performed by your general dentist or hygienist who will refer you to an orthodontist if a problem is identified. Treating such a problem may involve an orthodontist placing braces to open spaces allowing for proper eruption of the adult teeth. Treatment may also require referral to an oral surgeon for extraction of over-retained baby teeth and/or selected adult teeth that are blocking the eruption of the all-important eyeteeth. The oral surgeon will also need to remove any extra teeth (supernumerary teeth) or growths that are blocking the eruption of any adult teeth.
