Though I live in Pismo, I frequent Potter Books, as I order out-of-print books from them and find that they have better luck procuring the titles I want in good condition. I think I was in the store when the lady who wrote the less than complimentary review was there, if she was there close to the time her review is dated. I was in the back of the store, but heard the owner ask the woman's daughter to please look at the "ology" book (she was evidently reading) at the store counter. Her tone seemed very pleasant. The mother (who was in the front of the store somewhere) grabbed her daughter and they stormed out, but the owner did remind them on the way out that the store policies were clearly marked and that they were very different from Barnes and Noble. At that point the woman became very confrontational and would not leave. Unfortunate. I sure would hate to lose this independent bookstore. The owner told me after this woman left that she couldn't return damaged books, and that the people who felt entitled and had no regard for the fact that books are merchandise and don't belong to them invariably failed to read (or heed) the sign requesting that parents supervise their children. I am (I think) a good customer and browse through their books all the time. I have met former independent bookstore owners who also deplore the behavior of some kids and their parents and regret that the big box stores encourage it. Our county has lost at least three independent bookstores in the past year or so. Hope we don't lose Potter Books too!
