No, I am an Osteopath and a physician who attended Osteopathic medical school. Naturopaths attend Naturopathic school and receive an ND or Naturopathic Doctor degree. Naturopaths have a limited license to practice “natural medicine” and do not have the breadth of western medical training that MDs or American DOs have. They might utilize herbs, vitamins, supplements, homeopathic remedies, or acupuncture. NDs have training in nutritional counseling and some have additional instruction in manual therapy techniques. In some states, NDs have the legal ability to prescribe some medications.
Pediatric Care
After residency, I became Board Certified in Family Medicine and later earned a Fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Following residency, I worked as a Family Physician in Watsonville, California and practiced the full spectrum of primary care medicine including newborn care, pediatrics, and adult medicine. I practiced both ambulatory care and hospital-based medicine.
Primary Care
The Family Medicine Approach: Before 1990, the culture of medicine emphasized that patients get the best overall health care if they have a Family Doctor who is coordinating the medical team. It is the Family Doctor that makes sure the specialists don’t isolate the patient. Specialists will rarely look upon a patient as a holistic interconnected human being with complicated needs. Even though I no longer function as a Primary Care Physician, I think like one and offer the best of "old fashioned" integrated Family Medical care.

I am Board Certified in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. I became Board Certified in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in 1994 and continue to actively maintain this specialty certification. I became Board Certified in Family Medicine, through the American Board of Family Medicine, in 1988 and maintained this credential until 2017. I became a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1995.

In the rare event that you require hospitalization, I will send you to the UVM Medical Center Emergency Room for acute care and the Hospital Specialist will admit you and manage your inpatient care.

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. There are two ways to become licensed to practice medicine and surgery in the United States. One way is to become a DO. The other way is to become an MD. Both DOs and MDs have an unlimited license to practice medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. American DOs are trained in all aspects of western medicine and receive additional training in Osteopathic Manipulation and in Osteopathic philosophy.

I do not use any modalities like hot or cold packs, ultrasound, TENS units, electrical stimulation, cutaneous laser therapy, or any therapeutic machines in my office. I believe that the hands-on work of Osteopathic Manipulation is dependable, potent, and highly therapeutic. I believe that human touch is an incredibly powerful healing agent and inanimate machines cannot reproduce that power.
MRI
Most X-ray testing, MRI, CT Scans, Bone Density testing, and Ultrasounds are performed at UVM Medical Center Department of Radiology. Some MRI evaluations will be sent to Vermont Open MRI in South Burlington. I also make imaging referrals to hospitals outside of Chittenden County.

I have many athletes in my practice and treat a wide spectrum of problems associated with recreational athletes as well as high-level college and high school competitors. My goal in the treatment of athletic injuries is to pragmatically get the individual back to playing their chosen sport. In my treatment approach, I incorporate a focused exercise prescription, Osteopathic Manipulation to correct structural imbalances, and suggest an appropriate rest phase to allow proper healing.
Physical Therapy
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or OMT, is the unique hands-on manual medicine utilized by DOs. Each DO resonates with one or more of many different hands-on approaches and then applies them in an individualized way for each patient. Some of the techniques are very subtle and utilize gentle pressure while other techniques are more directly physical engaging the tissues in a more assertive way. We don’t just employ a technique like a drug or like a physical therapy modality.
Occupational Therapy
When necessary, I will make referrals to a Medical or Surgical specialist or subspecialists as well as referrals to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietician/Nutritionist, Psychologist, Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, etc.

Manual Therapy
Many PT schools have traditionally offered training in massage and soft-tissue techniques. In the early 1980s, several American DOs began offering courses to PTs in OMT. A few Osteopathic medical schools also began to offer post-graduate Osteopathic manual therapy courses to PTs. The most common types of manual therapy techniques utilized by PTs are based on an Osteopathic model, however they do not practice Osteopathy. PTs do not incorporate Osteopathic philosophy into their work and frequently use OMT as a technique-driven modality rather than an integrated holistic approach.
