Talk about portion control

This must be a restaurant run by weight watchers because i ordered the Cavatelli with chillies and ricotta last night at this overpriced, over zealous hot spot on flatbush avenue, and needed to eat another meal as soon as i left. Think of the mac and chess you made in college only smaller and a lot better. Don't get me wrong the food was very good and they used the best ingredients from local farms etc. but $17 for a plate smaller than a can of spaghetti o's is a little nuts. The service was awful. I read a lot about that before I went and their attitude is not warranted. Their food is good but not that good. They could really benefit from curbing the attitude. 20 minutes to get a refill on my drink? the place only has a dozen tables! Look maybe it's because im from the Bronx and live in Astoria but i just don't get what is up with Brooklyn, their manhattan prices, their less is more food philosophy (family run Italian joint? what Italian family do YOU know that serves you such little food), and the giant stick embedded in their rear ends. Go elsewhere, i stronly suggest you don't give these people your money

FOOD IS ALRIGHT...PASTA IS BETTER THAN THE PIZZA.....THESE PLACES JUST DON'T GET THE SAUCE RIGHT MAN.....! GIRLFRIEND AND I BOTH LEFT THE PIZZA AND ATE OUR PASTA AND VEGES.......!

THE BAD SERVICE HAS TO GO....I GET A LOT OF LIP FROM MY GUIDO BROTHERS....BUT DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR DINNER AND HAVE PEOPLE WITH NASTY ATTITUDES DISHING ME FOOD....GEEZ!

Pizza Perfection

A few years ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to spend a week in Naples and have true Neapolitan pizza, in neighborhood joints in the center of the old city. When we got back to Brooklyn we thought we'd never see the like again. And then Franny's opened up three blocks from our apartment -- bella Napoli right on Flatbush Avenue. The light, crispy crust is as close to the Neapolitan ideal as I've ever had outside of Naples itself. Our current favorite at Franny's comes with zucchini blossoms and anchovies, just like you'd get in the Spaccanapoli district. In addition, we usually have one or two of the light appetizers like squid or marinated eggplant, or one of the salumi. Maybe something from the extensive wine list, or finish with an amaro from the bar. We try to get there at opening time to avoid the rush, but the staff is always gracious no matter how busy things get. I realize that I should try to come up with some negative things to say, to make my review sound more ""balanced."" Okay, the tables are too close together. But even there, we've often had amusing conversations with strangers at adjacent tables, when each party eyed the other party's appetizers and wanted to compare notes. Not all restaurants have such a festive air about them.

NEVER AGAIN

Either the most pompous staff in all of Brooklyn or one that simply lacks in the fundamentals of business and common sense. On a Thursday night at 10.15 pm, I was told that they were too busy for a take out order of one pizza - the implication being that multiple pies or a bigger order would have been taken. Ok, that sometimes happens, though it shouldn't - the amount of time before ready should simply increase. Two days later, I called at 11.58 am to order another takeout pizza. The woman answering the phone told me that the kitchen doesn't open until noon - she claimed it was 11.55 am. Even if she was right, which she was not, she doesn't have the sense to take my order then and add FIVE minutes to the amount of time it might have taken to cook the pizza? I even asked her this question to which she repeated that the kitchen opens at noon. I'm expected to call back at the stroke of noon to place my order. i have heard mixed things about Franny's but still felt compelled to try them out. At this point, they will never get a dime from me and I hope they're in great standing with their current customer base because they clearly have no interest in adding new ones.

I had been working in Philly for about 10 days, and when I'd been released from the job, I decided to go visit my brother in Brooklyn. My brother and I are as close as can be and we share many of the same interests. One of those being our love of food. This stems from our parents both of which are food lovers and amazing cooks (ouy mother gratuated from the CIA in Hyde Park) As soon as I arrived at my brothers He suggested we go out to eat. He almost demanded we go to Franny's. I, of course, agreed.

When we got there it was very busy so we decided to eat at the bar. This could not have worked out better. My brother new exactly what to order (as he's been there many times before with his wife) and I let him take the rains. We started with the escarole salad with meyer lemon. Something so perfect in it's simplicity. For the record, I've tried recreating this dish with out the same results in spite of being quite talented in the kitchen. This is a testament to the quality ingredients Frann'ys uses. The salad needless to say was amazing.
We then had the beef tongue and the white clam pizza. Again, both were perfect. It was hard not to shovel it in to chase the flavor.

I have to mention that throught our dinning experience, our bartender/server was incredible. His wine suggestions were spot on, and he was all to happy to let us try any wine we happened to be talking about. I wish I could remember his name (matt, mark....maybe) but he only has himself to blame for his generosity.

Next was our pasta course. I should preface this by saying that one of my favorite things to eat and cook are meat ragu. There are an infinite number of ways to prepare them, and few dishes are as fun to experiment with and eat. I have found the best at Franny's. We also ordered the pesto with walnuts which was equally amazing.

This was one of the greatest dinning experiences I've ever had. I can not wait to return.

The next night, my brother and I decided to go out for dinner again. Unfortunately, we had been so impressed with our dinner the night before, we both felt like we were just choosing the runner up. We ended up going to Nine. It was a wonderful meal, good service at the table (bartender was a dick) I would highly recommend Nine. But eat there first then go to Franny's. Best for last and all that.

Right Out of a Larry David Episode!!

Dinning at this disastrous ""restaurant"" felt like being seated in a boxing ring with a hostile staff. The entire meal was a battle from beginning to end and like a casino the odds were stacked against us from winning any round. Here's a quick synopsis: Round 1: We tried to fix our wobbly table. We were scolded by the manager in a parental tone. (That hurt.) Round 2: Asked for a vegetarian plate. Was told, ""We don't do that"" with a snarl although half the appetizers are vegetables. (Ouch!) Round 3: When I asked for a second glass of wine the waitress topped off the not quite empty glass I had passed to my wife. When I pointed it out to the manager that perhaps at $12 a glass they should pour the full amount - she came back 5 minutes later and poured a few sips into an empty glass and said now we were even. (That was a blow.) Round 4: The pasta arrived in what would be considered a children's portion by most adults. (Hunger pains!) Round 5: Ordered two espressos which arrived ice cold. (Brain freeze hurts too.) Round 6: The bill came and there was no offer of compensation or apology after we gently expressed our dissatisfaction. (Starting to feel numb.) It was a knock out in the 6th round. We were down and out and never coming back!!!!

Underwhelmed

I love pizza, and was excited to try Franny's. The service was excellent; our waitress was knowledgeable and made great wine recommendations, and she was attentive throughout our entire meal. The food, on the other hand, left me wanting more. Our appetizers (pumpkin/balsamic and octopus) were good, with very fresh ingredients. The pizza - the reason we were there - really didn't have much flavor. The crust was just the way I like it, but the sauce was poorly seasoned and the cheese... just wasn't good. It wasn't necessarily a bad experience overall, but I was definitely expecting more.

Cute Decor, Horrible Pizza

Aside from the unsubstantiated prices and pretentious air, the pizza just isn't any good at Franny's. I LOVE thin crust pizza, but what I received at Franny's was a burnt piece of paper, topped with tasteless mozzarella and a ridiculous amount of overpowering parmesan cheese. Franny's represents what is wrong with the ""new"" Brooklyn, all hype but no substance. If you are actually in the mood for pizza you're better off at DiFara, Grimaldi's or just about any other pizzeria in Brooklyn. On a positive note, is a cute space.

POMPOUS AND OVERRATED

Right off the bat, the air of pretentiousness left me gasping for breath. The menu read of ""lettuces"" and ""cannolo"" (the singular of cannoli) - not how people talk, just their way of showing self-importance. After being seated at one of the smallest tables-for-two in town, I pulled the empty table next to us closer for some elbow room. The hostess swooped in to pull it away from us about 3 inches. That was all the room left to us between the other ""table-for-two."" I wondered what people did when the place was packed and someone in the booth wanted to get out for a restroom visit. We ordered the anchovy pizza and SODA which she NEVER brought. The waitress explained to us that if the menu doesn't MENTION cheese, there's no chesse on the pizza. Lame. Not exactly what I call informative. The way this menu neglects to mention important things like CHEESE AT A PIZZA PLACE and overbears with its ""lettuces,"" you'd think it was written by Frasier Crane with A.D.D. When we asked the waitress about ingredients, she replied with something like ""Oh yes that would be a yellow ground leaf from the mountains of the Himylayas, imported exclusively to us on the backs of African geese at 14,000 feet above sea level"" or some like verbose answer. Just tell me what the pizza is seasoned with!!!

The pizza was unsliced. Did they forget to slice everyone's pizza? Is this their kitschy gimmick? Slice your own pizza? Aren't we being put out enough with the cramped space, a table-obsessed hostess, menus with their noses in the air and waitresses too busy being self-congradulatory that they forget to bring your soda? CUT MY FREAKIN' PIZZA!!

The pizza was okay. Not going back there again. For a small, average pizza, $16.00 is pretty steep. If this is your favorite hangout and you love it so much that my review has you seething, feel free to flame me with a comment knowing that I won't be back to read it. Speaking of not coming back, that's the last time I waste an hour at Franny's.
