Dental Examination
Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Dr. Bodek will also take x-rays, which will include periapical x-rays for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as bite-wing x-rays for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.
X-rays
The severity of a toothache can range from chronic and mild to sharp and excruciating. It can be a dull ache or intense. The pain may be aggravated by chewing or by thermal foods and liquids which are cold or hot. A thorough oral examination, proper tooth testing and evaluation, along with appropriate dental x-rays, can help determine the cause. What we want to know is whether the toothache is really coming from a tooth or somewhere else.

Fluoride Treatment
Cleanings and Periodontal Treatment All patients should have a standard cleaning at least twice a year. A child should have a cleaning and fluoride treatment twice a year. We have two hygienists on staff to treat our patients.
Dental Sealants

Fillings
Fillings Resin and Amalgam We use both tooth-colored resin filings that are cured to match your teeth and amalgam (silver-colored) fillings that are used for posterior teeth because it is a more durable material. If an amalgam filling shows in your smile we can replace it with a tooth-colored resin filling.
Resin Composite
There are alternatives to conventional substances used in amalgams, such as gold and metal alloys. These include materials made from porcelain and composite resins, which are colored to match natural tooth enamel. Unfortunately, few materials can match the strength and durability of conventional dental amalgam and may need more frequent replacement.
Veneers
In just two or three dental visits, a veneer can reverse years of stains caused by foods, caffeine and tobacco use.
Crowns
A tooth must usually be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a special lab, which manufactures a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a temporary crown is applied until the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.
Bridges
If you are missing one or more teeth and there is at least one serviceable tooth on both sides of the space where the tooth is missing, one acceptable option for replacement, used for many years in dentistry, is the fixed bridge.
Dental Bonding
Whitening agents actually change the color of your teeth, but only are effective on certain types of stains. For example, bleaching agents have a difficult time removing brownish or grayish stains. These products also are not as effective on pitted or badly discolored teeth, or on restorations such as crowns, bridges, bonding and tooth-colored fillings (porcelain veneers or dental bonding may be more appropriate in this case).

Root Canal Treatment
When restoration procedures such as root canal therapy, crowns, or fillings are not enough to save a tooth, it may need to be pulled, or extracted.

Dentures
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals.
Overdentures
An overdenture is a removable denture that fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth or implants. The natural teeth must be prepared to provide stability and support for the denture.

Dental Implants
Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant, however. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have proper bone density and have a strong immune system. In all cases, dental implants require strict oral hygiene.

Tooth extraction procedures today are far less painful than ever before, thanks to powerful anesthetics and sedatives. In many cases, a patient who has tooth pulled experiences little or no discomfort, and only minor bleeding.

There are several alternatives to flossing for those who find it too difficult, too painful (sensitive gums or gum disease) or ineffective (those people with braces or delicate bridge work). But remember one thing: Never use a toothpick as a substitute for flossing. Toothpicks can tear delicate gum tissue and may damage existing dental restorations.
