Insects and Spiders

Ants
Pierce spent a good share of his life unaware of his disastrous reaction to insect stings. Then, on a Florida golf course six years ago, he nearly lost his life after being stung 25 times by fire ants. When he experienced double vision and difficulty breathing, he was rushed to the hospital. A year later, a similar reaction came from just two bee stings in Minnesota. Before he arrived at the hospital, he had passed out.
Spiders
All three species may occupy the same sites year after year, creating large numbers of nests. Though the three types of mud daubers differ in their nest building strategies, they all use spiders to feed their offspring. The queen wasp paralyses spiders with her sting and packs them into a cell. When the cell is full, she lays one egg in the cell (on a spider) and seals the cell never to return. The larvae that hatches, consumes the spiders until it is fully grown. Developing young will survive the winter in the nest.
Bees
Bumble bees are considered to be beneficial insects because they pollinate crops and plants, but they are prolific pollinators of flowers. Southeast Wisconsin has several bumble bee species, so size can range from 3/8″ to more than one inch long. The most prolific species has the familiar black and yellow fuzzy stripes. All bumble bees are fuzzy, but their colors can vary. They can also be all black, all yellow, or black and orange.
Wasps
Mud daubers are wasps that use mud to construct their nests. Southeast Wisconsin has three types of mud daubers: the organ-pipe mud dauber, the black and yellow mud dauber and the blue mud dauber.
Flies
Cicada killer wasps are usually found, underground, in embankments, under sidewalks or lawns. The female cicada killer uses her venom to paralyze cicadas in July and August and places them in cells of her nest. She puts one or two paralyzed cicadas in each cell of the nest and deposits a single egg. She then closes the cell, flies away and never returns. In a few days, when the egg hatches, the larvae feeds on the cicadas until only the cicada’s outer shell remains. It then spins a cocoon and hibernates until the following spring. In spring, it will emerge as an adult. Only one generation is produced each summer.
Beetles
Asian lady beetles look like typical “ladybugs,” but they vary in color from red to yellow to orange, with or without black spots on their wings. When not flying, these wings conform to the body, making the spots appear to be on their backs. They are oval, convex and about ¼” long.
Hornets
The Bee Man of Wisconsin, founded by Curt Jepson, actually started as a conversation with his brother, Chris, in 1979. Chris, a beekeeper in central Wisconsin, saw an ad in a beekeeper publication about a pharmaceutical lab needing wasp venom to be used by allergists. After speaking with the labs, Curt learned that they would pay him for as many bald-faced hornets as he could collect. With only a ladder, veil, gloves, pruning shears and a spatula, Curt gained hands-on experience (sometimes the hard way) climbing trees in the dark to remove bald-faced hornet nests. After much trial and error, he perfected his technique.
Yellow Jackets
Aerial yellow jackets have the same characteristics, but their nest resembles the nest of the bald faced hornet. It is a fairly large, grayish-brown, papery nest found usually in trees or under eaves on homes.
Stinging Insects
The Bee Man has gained quite a reputation in the Milwaukee area and throughout the state for his knowledge and treatment of stinging insects. To call on his services, open up the telephone book to “The Bee Man, Inc.”
Aphids
The multi-colored Asian lady beetle is actually native to Asia. The United States imported this little critter in the early 1900s to control the population of certain insect pests. The first wild population, in Wisconsin, was discovered in the mid-1990s. The Asian lady beetle is an effective, natural control for harmful plant pests such as aphids and helps to reduce the need for harmful pesticides on our foods. On average, one Asian lady beetle can eat over 5,000 aphids in its lifetime.
Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs are common in Southeast Wisconsin, however, you may not notice them until fall when they begin looking for a protected location to spend the winter. Unfortunately, one of their favorite spots to “overwinter” is inside the walls of homes.
