Although I have not been to this location (I plan to go tomorrow), my history with Taco Casa began in Tuscaloosa in 1979. I've always found the food to be excellent, the friendliness of employees notably exceptional, and order accuracy extremely good. I feel the prices are a bit high, but worth it. My criticisms would be: 1-Order extra meat! 2-Meat can be extremely greasy (but it's good). Take a Tagamet first. 3-Don't get tacos to go unless you get the mild, hot, or extra hot sauce separately. The tacos will get soggy rapidly if you don't. 4-Sour cream is sold separately. 5-Not enough cheese, but you can order extra (at cost) if you like. 6-The beverages are packed WAY too full of ice. Order light ice if you want something to drink. I highly recommend beefy nachos w/ extra meat and peppers on the side (if you like jalapenos). I love the enchiladas, tacos, beef burritos (w/ extra meat), chili burritos (a meal in itself)and frijoles with a bag of those great chips. My sister loves the taco burgers. Everything is consistently fresh and heavenly tasting! It's my favorite food, EVER. On the extremely rare occasion an order is incorrect, it is promptly corrected and more than made up for in generosity. Be prepared to say if you want your items "mild, hot, or extra hot".
Overall, this is the best Mexican Restaurant in B'ham. I grew up in Ft Worth with the family that owned El Chicos, so there is a reason for my enthusiasm. Mexico Lindo is the only one, so far, that is like the authentic Mexican cuisine of the past. Everyone else is trying to adapt or change their food to appeal to Urban Hipsters and food faddists...Not this fine establishment!! The best of the best is the "Tocinetas de Camarones", start with that and try something different on each visit. This is the only place I know of in this area that even makes the Shrimp wrapped in Bacon....The service is excellent, Futbol is on the tube in the Cantina, or Beisbol sometimes. They have Mole, Rellenos, and all the usual Mexican meals, but try something that you have never seen anywhere else...My Wife loves the Margaritas on Weds, and they have something every day of the week as a special.
I used to live in Tuscaloosa (1979-1998) and frequented the 8 Taco Casa locations there. When I moved 30 miles east of Birmingham, I desperately missed Taco Casa until I found this location. The food was fantastic. Order accuracy and employee friendliness were exceptional. I would travel the distance for the food and order large amounts at a time to keep for later. The last time I called to place an order, the number had been disconnected. In disbelief, I drove there. There was a "for lease" sign on the building. I could've cried. I plan to find the Lakeshore location tomorrow because I called there and someone did answer. The prices are a bit high, but well worth it. My sister, who now lives in Rhode Island, is always jealous when I tell her I've been to Taco Casa. I MISS YOU, 280 TACO CASA! RIP!
