All three of us have achieved specialty training to bring you competent and efficient medical full scope eye care. Dr. Brad has obtained extra board certification, has completed residencies in both medical optometry and low vision through VA Medical centers, and has had faculty positions at The Ohio State University Eye Clinic; Dr. Amy has received extra certification in her special interest of pediatrics and vision therapy; Dr. Bastian has a master’s degree on top of his medical optometry training in specialty contact lenses and scleral lenses.
Primary Care
We embrace integrated eye care, working with a team approach to provide premium eye care. Medical optometry manages conditions like Diabetic Eyecare, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Emergency Eyecare, Dry Eye, Keratoconus and irregular corneas, Amblyopia and Strabismus to name a few. We co-manage with our referral sites, corresponding with your primary care doctors and surgeon referrals as needed. This relationship is very similar to how an internist may work with a cardiologist or endocrinologist.
Emergency Care
Never overlook the importance of safety eyewear when playing sports. Every year, hundreds of men, women, and children are injured while playing sports. To help prevent sports-related eye injuries, athletes should use protective athletic eyewear whether or not prescription eyewear is needed. One choice is a sports frame with prescription or non-prescription polycarbonate lenses. Baseball or softball players who are hit in or near the eye, or suffer a blow to the head, should seek immediate care at a hospital emergency room or from an eye care professional.

Glaucoma
In the past, we thought that glaucoma was mostly caused by an elevated intraocular pressure. We thought this pressure build-up mechanically pushed on the optic nerve, leading to its demise. Currently, we know there is much more to glaucoma. While elevated intraocular pressure is still a risk for glaucoma, it is not its primary culprit. The optic nerve requires constant nourishment from our vascular supply. If our general vascular health is compromised, the optic nerve becomes malnourished and becomes damaged. The newest research on glaucoma suggests that good nutrition and judicious use of supplements can lessen your risk for glaucomatous progression. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to be beneficial to several different mechanisms in addition to vascular regulation. No specific “dosage” guidelines are definitely established, however most glaucoma patients should completely eliminate trans fats from their diet, significantly reduce intake of saturated fats, and supplement an already-abundant intake of omega-6 fatty acids with an omega-3 fatty acid supplement.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Riya Paranthan attended the University of Kentucky, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, Bachelors in Biology with high honors in 2010. During her time in Kentucky, she was involved in extensive Ophthalmology research at the University of Kentucky medical hospital and authored multiple papers in Molecular Vision and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. She was the recipient of the Diachun Award for outstanding research at the time. Thereafter, she received her Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2014. She was a National Liason at her local chapter of AOSA.
Macular Degeneration
When it comes to vitamins for eyes and macular degeneration the most important study is the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a 10 year study of 3500 people with AMD.

Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudiness that develops in the normally clear lens of the eye. This cloudiness usually worsens until it scatters or blocks the light trying to enter the eye, causing vision to become dim, blurry and distorted.
