We lived in Passaic for 18 years, and were crazy about Food Basics. Definitely bargain priced, it's not as big or as pristine as Stop and Shop or even Acme, but prices and quality of the canned food, rices, ground coffee grounds and staples were worth the trip. Even Smart Balance, which is apparently not available in places overseas, costs much less in Food Basics than the major supermarkets. Many of their products come with hechhserim (rabbinic supervision) for the local Jewish community, "American Choice" products being their store brand. (I'd check the expiry date on the refrigerated frozen kosher chicken. And, the canned fruit seemed to he mostly Triangle P.) The only negative comments I have are that one has to pack his/her own bundles, which can take some time. Finally, the aisles are small and there are often shelf-stockers in the way. (It's always like that where we live now.) At any rate, I'd give it a five star rating except for those points. My 5-stars rating should be 4.5 stars is for the slight inconveniences. Oh. it doesn't have Acme's Irish Soda Bread. Pity. Nevertheless I always felt great considering the mountain of food I'd bought for the price.
