This project is situated in the Historic Old South Baton Rouge neighborhood once referred to as the “bottoms”-the area strategically located between LSU campus and Downtown Baton Rouge. This modest renovation/addition fits into the city’s over-all master plan and on going revitalization efforts in the area. The project involved renovating an existing single story building and adding a second floor. The design utilizes modest materials and geometries appropriate for the gritty side street the terminates near the levy. The second floor windows provide views of the Mississippi River Bridge. A yellow shaft cuts through the building and is visible from the outside as well as most of the interior spaces. Capped with skylights this shaft connects the first and second floor-celebrating the transition between the old and new. In contrast to the existing structure, the second floor addition is designed to be full of natural light, colorful and open. Offices and support spaces surround a central core designed to house workstations. The sliding glass partitions that enclose the offices and meeting areas provides acoustic separation while maintaining the openness and visual connection expected in a progressive, collaborative office space. The design strikes a balance between cost and aspiration, transforming an uninviting one-storystructure into a functioning office space for a dynamic small business.

Landscaping and Fencing

Landscaping
The residence consists of sustainable materials and elements that allows a mixture of cool and warm tones to flow throughout the space. Consisting of two levels, the first holds entertainment spaces and living spaces for the family and second holds the bedrooms, laundry section, and a guest room. On the exterior there are native materials and vegetation that wrap the home for a simple landscape design. A light turquoise and aluminum siding application allows the home to blend into the dusk and dawn sun which gives the illusion of an ever-changing home.
Walkways
Removing walls and adding needed spaces, the house was reconfigured to open up the plan and use glass walls to connect it with the outdoors. From the tile pattern on the kitchen floor, to the linear concrete walkways, to the extended planes of the master bedroom walls and ceiling, the intent of the entire project is to draw the users attention, through the glass walls, to the landscape beyond. The owners now can enjoy expanses of beautiful views from every living and bedroom space of the house.

Siding
The botanical garden’s half faces the garden gate, the cantilevered roof covers a bench and porch that will be used by volunteer groups as a secondary meeting space. The interior consists of two offices, restroom, kitchenette and an open meeting area. The finishes throughout the building are simple and durable -metal/plywood siding and sealed concrete floors. The saddlebag on the back of the building is for tool and material storage.
