Insects and Spiders

Ants
When you see ants in and around your home or business, it may not send up an immediate red flag. There are many species of ants, most are just a nuisance however there are some that can do real damage to your property. Spiders

Termites

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are tiny, rust colored pests that feed on humans. As they progress through their lifecycle, bed bugs appear differently. Adult bed bugs are between 5-7 mm and about the size of an apple seed. Their bodies are long, flat, and oval-shaped if they haven’t fed recently or reddish-brown and rounder if recently fed. They have wings, but cannot fly, four-part antennas, and a three-segmented beak. If you have a good sense of smell, you may notice an odor that is musty and sweet if bed bugs are nearby. You may think bed bugs are dangerous, but they are not known to spread disease or illness. They bite when they feed off of human hosts and are especially tough to get rid of when they infest homes. This is why they’re considered to be a serious pest for homeowners and business owners.
Fleas
Fleas are about 1/8 of an inch and can jump nearly a foot, which makes it easy for them to stay undetected as they hitch a ride from the outdoors onto your dog or cat. Not only do fleas bite your dog or cat, but they could also lay eggs and create a bigger problem in your home and to your pet’s health. Fleas have the capability to live in carpets, laying eggs between the fibers. As eggs hatch, the problem spreads. You may not know fleas are in your home until you find them on your pet.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are infamous for their ability to survive and thrive in even the most inhospitable conditions: believe it or not, they can survive after losing their heads, hold their breath underwater for 30 minutes or more, and go without food for up to one month. Unfortunately, roaches’ hardiness means that they can be extraordinarily difficult to evict from your home or business. Silverfish
Despite their name, silverfish are not a small fish but rather a tiny teardrop-shaped insect. They vary in color from white to bluish-silver, have three long bristles on their rear and are typically between 12 and 19 mm long.

Wasps
Paper wasps are typically around one inch long, with the smallest measuring at half an inch and the largest as long as one and a half inches. Their bodies are a dark shade of red, reddish brown or yellow. They prefer to make their nests in areas that are exposed yet difficult to reach, such as the corners of windows, the undersides of porches and decks, or within attics if they are able to find a point of entry.

Ticks are common across the United States, and there are over 25 species in Pennsylvania alone. The four species that you are most likely to encounter include the American dog tick, the blacklegged tick, the lone star tick and a brown dog tick. Ticks can cause Lyme disease in both animals and humans, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) in humans and tick paralysis in animals and young children. Finding a tick on your body or in your dog’s fur doesn’t automatically mean that you will experience health issues related to tick bites, but it’s a risk that no one wants to take.

Nests are located in elevated areas, usually in non-visible areas such as in bushes and shrubs. The over wintering queen chooses the nesting area. Some nests have been found over two feed in diameter. Whiteface hornets are beneficial because they assist in controlling various small insects.

Moths
Indian meal moths are the largest of the pantry pests with adults measuring at about 9mm. Meal moths will invade a variety of foods from dry pet food and grain to powdered milk and candy.

Mice

Rats
