The Walters Art Museum is located in Baltimore, and has a rich collection of art from predynastic Egypt to 20th century Europe. Its native American artifacts galleries include sculptures, masks, game objects, figurative and painted vases, gold jewelry and ritual works. The Walters Art Museum displays more than 1,000 works of Asian art, including works from China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia. Additionally, the museum offers 18th and 19th century Islamic, Renaissance and Baroque arts and medieval art. Additionally, The Walters Art Museum offers more than 900 illuminated manuscripts and printed books and chronicles. It has a library offering a collection of more than 120,000 books, periodicals, and auction catalogues encompassing the history and theory of art and architecture. The Walters Art Museum offers educational and entertainment programs for adults, kids and families.

One of the best small art museums in the country. Underappreciated, but a most lovely treasure. Artworks are lushly displayed (no chrome-on-a-white-wall minimalism here). My favorite sections are ancient Greek and Roman, and, the best, the medieval. Such beauty is balm for the soul. Please go and sing its praises! With the upcoming (starting October, 2006) free admission, there's no excuse not to!

I've been to many museums around the world, and there is no finer display than the Walters. The special exhibits are always supurb.....the time and effort which goes into every showing is obvious. With the Walters in town, Baltimore does not take a back seat to any other metropolitan area when it comes to wonderful art of various media. Dr. Vikan has done a marvelous job of developing a world class museum.
