Wonko's Toys and Games is truly one of Austin's gems. I've stopped by a handful of times and have always received the best service around. Don't expect to be bum-rushed as soon as you walk in the door (a practice I truly despise), but if you have any questions or special requests, they are always more than happy to help out. I have even called up there a couple of times with questions about something-or-another I was looking around for, and they were able to help me out immediately. I wouldn't consider myself an avid collector, but my girlfriend and I are pretty heavily into sci-fi, and Wonko's has *tons* of figurines that I haven't seen elsewhere (Dr. Who and Firefly come to mind). This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the incredible newsletter that these folks put out. It is opt-in on a clipboard at the counter, and it is the only newsletter that I truly enjoy seeing poke it's head into my inbox. It always starts off with a couple pages of serialized fiction reminiscent of the late Douglas Adams. This is then followed by all the new products to hit the store since last "episode". Finally, it has a schedule of all upcoming gaming events held up at the shop. I don't know what all games are played up there, as I have only really gotten into D&D, and I haven't played that seriously for years. I assume however, that they will accommodate whatever people want to get together and play. If your inner child is in the mood for wandering around the most magical isles in town - Wonko's is the place to go. http://www.wonkos.com/

Thank you!! I received the “Keep Austin Weird” tee shirts in yesterday afternoon’s mail. I was in Austin last month for my father’s bypass surgery (he’s doing great!). I stayed at the Radisson and, while I was there, visited the gift shop. Being a Grandma, I couldn’t return home to Arizona without something for the grandkids. The gentleman who was in the store was very helpful and polite. I bought several items along with the “Keep Austin Weird” shirts. When I got home, I found out that I needed two shirts in a larger size—the boys grew!. I called the hotel and was transferred to the gift shop. I explained to the gentleman that I needed to have two more shirts in a small adult size shipped to my home. Although he didn’t have any of the shirts in the size I needed at the time, he assured me that he would get them ordered from his supplier and get them to me. He kept me updated on the status of my order—the date the shirts were ordered, when they would arrive at the store, and when to expect them at my home. You can’t get better customer service than that anywhere! Please forward my thanks and appreciation to this very kind gentleman. I’m sorry, but in all our conversations, I didn’t get his name. I wish your business continued success. Best regards, Nanette Woodhull Peoria, Arizona
If you are looking for a refuge from the weariness and oppression of reality, step through the portal of Wonko's doors and find yourself in a land of perpetual youth. The shelves are lined from wall to wall in wonderous toys. From action figures, to board games, this shop has something for everyone. Not just stocking the latest and greatest, they also have a respectable amount of vintage for sale. I have visited this shop every week since moving to Austin, just out of the eager anticipation of seeing what's new and in stock. The fellas that run this place are laid back and illustrate just how cool Austinites are!
