I was so excited to try a new restaurant and love Greek food. So many signs pointed to what was to be the worst restaurant experience I've had in Atlanta. The bartender was gratuitously rude as we waited to be seated. We asked to see a drink list and he turned his back. Asked a couple minutes later assuming he didn't hear and his response: you'll get a menu when you get a menu. We ordered the family style meal and it was not nearly enough food for 7 people. Definitely overpriced for the quality too. Three bites of hummus, 2 meat skewers, 2 bites of dessert for $25?? I left my iPhone on the table when leaving the restaurant (that was MY mistake). But I'm positive someone from the restaurant took it. We went back, asked around...nothing. I was able to track the phone and found it at an apartment complex near the restaurant and went to the manager with this information, who wasn't at all helpful. I've worked in customer service and dined at a range of places and never been treated this way. The belly dancers and Greek vibes/dancing are fun and a bit touristy, but spend your money elsewhere. Atlanta & surrounding areas have too many good restaurants.

We anticipated a great food experience. The only thing enjoyable was the atmostphere and entertainment.
We ordered the Chef's meal which was extremely over priced for the amount of food you get. It's a sampler type meal served family style, and a good variety of dishes, but there were four and us and MAYBE enough for to serve two. The rice might have been ONE serving. If we go back, we will definitely order singles meals off the menu. We left feeling like we had been taken for a ride.
As far as the service, it was absolutely TERRIBLE!!! The table next to us was seated after us, but two groups of customers had come and gone from that table before we even got our desert. We had to keep asking the other waiter to find ours and send him to us, and had to ask for everything to be brought. If we ever go back and we get the same waiter, we will asked to be moved to a different table/server.
If you're not in a hurry and not very hungry, and want to pay more than the meal is worth, give it a try. Otherwise, save your money.

In reading the 2009 review a light bulb went off. Change of ownership!! Ah Hah! Finally an explanation. While the menu is the same, the portions and quality are not. As only one example, the gyro platter used to be HUGE, thick juicy portions of meat. Now they are small thin and dry. The steak is overcooked and oversalted. On three recent occasions, we actually had to request the hummus. This used to come to the table as soon as you were seated. Service is sketchy at best. I have been so disappointed the last three times. Now I know why -- new owners. Looks like the May reviewer had a good experience but our July and August visit with out of town guests was not good. They liked the entertainment but not the food. We might give it one more try -- but just one more.

SO...Surprised someone hasn't posted a review for Taverna Plaka in awhile...this place is awesome- took a date here and it was really good food (you make the hummus at the table!) and the belly dancing was sweet (good distraction/fun for a 1st date) although it was KINDA loud- suggest maybe sitting on the patio for any intense conversations. Overall, great experience wanted to share since it didn't look like anyone had posted a review in awhile. WIll definitely be back!
I went there on march 12 with my girlfriend at about 7 for dinner.
The food was very good and memorable. I had the lamb chops and my
girlfriend had the chicken kabobs both tasty. The belly dancer entertaining and the line dance very cool. The server was very energetic and positive

After reading, from another reviewer, that this restaurant has recently become newly owned/operated, it may explain the poor experience we had last time we dined at Taverna Plaka. We are always on the search for new, authentic Greek food and have usually been pleased with Taverna Plaka for the past several years. We always take friends/family there, and typically stick to the meze. The service has always been slighty below average, but we overlooked it because of the food quality and fun atmosphere. However, on our last visit in Jan 09, the service and poor quality/value of food served was hard to overlook. Plaka is a great place for large parties on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, they don't value the patronage of tables under five, and it can turn into a long, frustrating and dissatisfying dining experience. The last time we went the meze portions were minuscule, cold and flavorless. We had to ask several times for the complimentary hummus and bread that is customarily given as soon as your are seated. Drinks were never refilled. Some of the meze we ordered never even came out. Overall, it was a complete let down after years of good food and fun times at Plaka. I realize businesses are hurting from the current economic climate and recession, but this one obvsiously was not. It's extremely poor business to compromise quality and portions, but still charge customers the same amount. If we do decide to go back, it will be a very long time.....

I arranged a surprise party for a group of 30 people and this restaurant was the best choice for the mix of people that attended! They provided great service, with a friendly waitress that was very accomodating to each individuals needs. Not one person at my table had any complaints or mischarges on thier bills. The atmosphere was great for all ages and personalities. The employees and entertainment was very festive and lively. The belly dancers were a great added source of entertainment and were very friendly as well. The food was amazing!!!! Everything was tender and tasteful with ALOT of flavor. We opted for the chef's menu which was fairly priced for the large portions of food that they served us. The drinks were average prices for Atlanta too! Great recommendation for parties or a group of friends that want to have a great time and enjoy some entertainment and delicious food!!!

I recently organized a party for forty people in the private room. The manager could not have been more accomodating and helpful. The servers and bartenders were an absolute joy, and the food was delicious. Many guests were unfamiliar with Greek food and had fun mashing their own hummus. The belly dancer also added to the excitement of the night. Many in our group were new to our company, but the family-style service and the overall atmosphere really helped with the bonding experience. Opa!
