The Admiral, a dive worth taking.

My family and I went to the Admiral for dinner over the holiday weekend. Yes, it was crowded, yes, we had to wait a little while for our table (we suggest that you make a reservation, and if your table isn't ready, then chill out, and grab a drink at the ample bar). Yep, it looks like a dive, but we felt instantly welcomed and relaxed here, the hostess acknowledged us immediately and let us know that they were very busy and running a bit behind. We didn't mind the wait, after all, it was a holiday and Friday night, we expected it. It was only about 10 minutes anyway.

The Admiral’s food is absolutely amazing. Delicate Foie Gras with walnuts and pound cake, light as a feather, and as good as anything you can get in Paris. The duck was yummy; the flat iron steak was cooked just right. Smoky short ribs, large juicy sea scallops. Savory collard greens, whipped sweet potatoes and some kind of wonderful risotto complemented these dishes beautifully. We passed everything around the table. Each creation was unique and delicious, cooked to perfection.

They blend traditional cuisine with local fresh products and seasonal ingredients. I don't know where Chef Elliot Moss went to culinary school, but he is brilliant. Their wine list is small, but a nice selection and nothing there was over-priced whatsoever. We thought the food was extremely reasonable, and the portions quite generous. The staff was polite and efficient, the atmosphere was friendly and laid back, and we loved it. We will continue to visit each time we are fortunate enough to find ourselves in Asheville.
