From what I've seen after having visited the place for the first time in twenty years (previously a member), I can tell you that the place is falling apart. They may have nice people and a beautiful, new worship center, but the membership does not have many families. In fact, senior adults have outnumbered everyone else by a wide margin. The row I sat on was nothing but senior adults, as well as the row behind me and the row in front of me. There is no real long-term vision for the church where growth is concerned. The worship center on this visit was half full. From my past experience, the members are scared of having new people joining the church. Now, they are even in their third pastor search in thirteen years. There's not even a youth minister or much of a youth group. There are no singles and very few young couples. It seems the church's future, to these folks, is in the past. That does not bode well for the future. They place an overemphasis on world missions, but never do anything for the local church. And where there is no vision, the Bible says, the people perish. I give this church's existence ten years, tops.
We are sorry you had a less than positive experience. We value everyone’s input and want to address every concern in order to be better at reaching all people with the gospel of Christ. Nearly everyone else reviewing our church online expresses experiences which indicate they are finding what they are looking for here: friendly, loving, and giving people of all ages and backgrounds who love God and others. Our diverse congregation is an inclusive fellowship seeking to reach all nations with His message. We are growing spiritually and numerically, adding new members all the time and regularly baptizing new believers. From where you sat, you could not see our fantastic youth group or our dynamic college/career group. Our young families are scattered around the worship center, many of whom do not sit on the main floor where you could view them. In fact, many them volunteer during that time in our top-notch extended childcare and exciting Children’s Church. Despite the long-time trend of senior pastors moving every few years, ours have longer than typical tenures. We are now blessed with an interim pastor, Dr. Norman Blackaby—an internationally-known author and speaker. (And, yes, his father, with whom he has co-authored many books, wrote Experiencing God). Our search committee is closing in on a new pastor, so we encourage you to come back and join with us in serving Christ as we carry out His Great Commands and His Great Commission. Please contact us (www.LamarBaptist.org) and we can share more with you about our vision for the future.
