Since her 2009 CCRA certification, she has divided her time at CVSS with surgery and canine rehabilitation responsibilities. Diana enjoys the opportunity to follow her canine patients along the continuum of care from surgery through the rehabilitation process. Employing direct patient care, owner education, and modalities such as aquatic therapy and the underwater treadmill, she assists her patients in getting back to their happy, full lives with their owners. As further courses and clinical training becomes available, Diana is pursuing opportunities to learn advanced rehabilitation techniques including manual therapy, advanced pain management, and cold laser therapy.
Injury Treatment
Therapeutic ultrasound is used to expedite healing and increase mobility. Indications for using therapeutic ultrasound include: muscle strains, spasm and contracture, ligament sprains and tendonitis.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
The PennHIP method of diagnosing canine hip dysplasia assesses the quality of the canine hip and quantitatively measures canine hip joint laxity. PennHIP is more accurate than the current standard in its ability to predict the onset of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the hallmark of canine hip dysplasia. The PennHIP method has several differences from the OFA approach, including the ability of assessing puppies as young as 16 weeks of age. This is important for breeders or working owners who wish to breed or begin a dog’s working career before 2 years of age. PennHIP radiographs can only be taken and submitted by veterinarians or technicians certified on the PennHIP method.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists offers PennHIP and OFA certifications, which are radiographic screening methods for canine hip dysplasia evaluation. Canine hip dysplasia is a genetically determined developmental abnormality of the coxofemeral joint in which the hip does not fit together properly. Hip laxity produces abnormal development of the femoral head resulting in degenerative joint disease, physical dysfunction and varying degrees of pain for the dog.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
The OFA ( www.offa.org ) is the oldest method of assessing dysplastic hips, and currently maintains registries of several inherited diseases in dogs and cats, including elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, congenital cardiac abnormalities, as well as hip dysplasia. Certification is provided when radiographs are taken at or after the dog is 24 months old. Submission of x-rays to the OFA are blindly assigned to 3 veterinary radiologists who grade the hips into one of 7 categories: excellent, good, fair, borderline, or mildly, moderately, or severely dysplastic. The first 3 categories are eligible for OFA certification.

Wound and Fracture Care
Dr. Gauthier’s special interests include minimally invasive surgery, surgical oncology, orthopedics, and wound management. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife Zahra, daughter Margot, son Ari and dog Madeline.

Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Chris Gauthier grew up in south Florida. He attended the University of Florida and earned a B.S. in Zoology and a M.S. in Business Management. In 2010, he graduated cum laude with his veterinary degree from the University of Florida. He then went on to complete an internship at Tufts University, a surgical internship at the VCA Animal Specialty Center of South Carolina, and an M.S. degree and residency in small animal surgery at Colorado State University. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016. Prior to joining Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists, he worked as a staff surgeon at Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, Maryland and Charleston Veterinary Referral Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

X-Ray

Small Animal Vet
After graduation he worked as a small animal veterinarian for two and a half years in Manchester, England. During this time he took advanced training courses in ultrasonography and fracture management and developed his interest in small animal surgery. Dr. Burgess spent a year working and traveling in New Zealand and Australia prior to completing a small animal rotating internship at Mississippi State University. During his internship he conducted a biomechanical study to help better understand cranial cruciate disease in dogs.
