A-1 Car Rental
I had a great experience with A1 Car Rental and working with Stan, the owner. He is a 'get it done' kind of guy, straight forward and easy to deal with, he will rent you the type of vehicle you want and need for a great price. He even gave me a car with studs on the tires "in case it snows". He makes the transaction easy, prices are exceptional. I travel to Anchorage often on business and will only use A1 Car Rental.
WORST CAR RENTAL COMPANY EVER. THEY FLAT OUT STEAL FROM YOU.
When I arrived at the counter, a man told me I had to purchase insurance before Dollar would rent me a car. I told him I already had insurance. He told me it was Dollars policy to sell insurance and began showing me your rates for insurance. I again, told him I already had insurance. He asked for my insurance card and specifically said "its your funeral" and gave me the keys.
When I arrived at the car, I noticed considerable amounts of damage to the vehicle. I began marking the larger areas of damage. There were so many damaged areas, I literally drew large circles covering entire areas of the vehicle. There were no less than 40 areas of nicks, dents, scratches, "chipped paint" etc on the vehicle. After awhile, I stopped and went to the girl in the window and asked if it was necessary for me to mark every little item of damage. I felt I was being excessive to the point of ridiculous. While texting on her phone, Kimberly told me don't worry about it, its "just a formality." I gave her the form, she signed it, gave me a copy, and I left.
Upon returning the vehicle, Kimberly (same girl) walked out of the office, walked directly to the lower passenger side door and said "what about this?" She walked out of the office, didn't look at anything else, went directly to the passenger side door and immediately told me she needed me to fill out an insurance form. I barely noticed it when she pointed it out, and relative to the other damage on the vehicle, this was nothing. It looked like a little smudge of dirt or tar. I began pointing out the much larger areas of damage to the vehicle. I mentioned I didn't hear or see anything hit the vehicle while driving, and I highly doubt that I did the damage to the vehicle. I also pointed out that she (Kimberly) was the same person who told me I didn't need to mark every little speck of damage on the vehicle, that it was "just a formality". She told me, "its no big deal, you just need to fill out this form for the insurance."
When I returned to Houston, $618.40 had already been taken out of my bank account. I hadn't even unpacked my bags and they already stole my money.
That's when I found out (too late) that Dollar Anchorage has a history of screwing people over and taking their money by doing this exact same scam. They lie and manipulate people into buying your insurance, and they charge people excessive amounts of money for damage they didn't even do to the vehicle.
I was robbed out of $500 before my bags were even unpacked in Houston. They ruined my vacation. They are unethical and immoral.
Thanks for screwing me over and stealing my money Dollar.

I WILL tell everyone with ears or internet about your shady business practices and how you lie, cheat and steal from your customers.
Do not rent from this place. Twice they have offered me a studded tire car without disclosing upfront what the additional charges would be accurately in addition to roadside services that they don't apprise you of.
Both times I had arranged for the rental through and online reservation service which I have no problem with, however I do with Dollar. The first time I noticed that my rental price for one day had dramatically increase and I asked why. It was then that the clerk told me about the additional charge of $28.00, since it was a one day rental I let it slide.
The second time I had a rental rate for four days of $14.00. Again when I went to the counter I was asked if I would like a car with studded tires, I asked what is the additional fee. The clerk said, " It's 30.00 but I can give it to you for $19.00." I took that as it would increase my daily rental rate from $14.00 to $19.00. It was until I went to extend the car for one more day that I found out I was being charged $53.00 a day for a compact car.
I had a conversation over the phone with the manager and said you need to have your clerks be more upfront with these additional fees. I told her I wasn't happy and I was going to be writing a bad review, so she started making all these concessions offering me one day free studded tire ($19.00) and a refund on a roadside assistance package of $6.75/day that I was never informed of. ($27.00) I said, Fine, but I am still going to write a bad review anyway, and I could have got a better deal at Enterprise." She immediately said, "Well then I won't be giving you any money back." I will not rent from them ever again.
After renting an inadequate vehicle, I left a comment on line then received a letter from Darrell Floyd, the owner saying he will not rent to me again. Headquarters was shocked with his retaliation and said it was unacceptable. Even his letter had misspelled words. He's unstable.
I am a local customer who was trying to rent a vehicle for 5 days while mine was in the shop. I was sick on the day I had arranged to pick up the rental. I left the house early - just getting out of bed long enough to throw on some sweats and a sweatshirt and pull my hair back into a ponytail. Suffice it to say, I was looking less than "stellar". When I got to the airport I was told that they did not accept local "debit" cards and asked if I had another card. (I had used that same card less than a month prior in Las Vegas with no trouble). I pulled out another card and was asked if it could hold a $250 limit. I said yes, and he just looked at me. At that point, I realized that the gentleman was insinuating I was not capable of paying and asked him to cancel my reservation then left without renting a vehicle. He never even ran or looked at my cards, just handed them back to me.
They lied to me about everything, gas prices, insurance, and size of the car. I ended up turning it back in because of the misrepresentation. They charged $150 for using the car for 20 minutes, just long enough to find out they had lied about the insurance and gass prices. Fortunately I had used an AMEX and I got all my money back. I would go without before I rented from them again.
