Preventive Care

Dental Care
We recommend all horses have a dental exam at least once a year. Southern Equine Service offers a variety of dental services. We have both hand floats and power floats. A thorough sedated oral examination with a speculum is performed on the horse so we can observe all the teeth. We then carefully float the teeth so that the sharp points are reduced and the arcade is balanced.
Vaccination
Annual boosters of the AAEP recommended core vaccines are recommended for all age groups after the initial series. Additional “at-risk” vaccinations may also be recommended for horses who travel, are pregnant, or have an increased risk of exposure.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Enucleation, or removal of the eye and some surrounding structures, is usually performed due to persistent eye disease unresponsive to medical therapy causing pain associated with the eye. This procedure can be performed under general anesthesia (down and asleep) or standing. Due to the risk of recovery in any case of general anesthesia, many enucleations are performed standing under heavy sedation and local anesthesia (nerve blocking). The eyelids are sutured and the globe is dissected out of the orbit (socket) and the area is sutured closed. Although the area is often swollen initially, a pressure bandage is applied for several days and the patient is kept on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
Nutritional Counseling
A horse suffering from dental issues may have weight loss/poor body condition, difficulty chewing, pain, or head tossing while being ridden.
Comprehensive Examination
Although a physical examination on a normal horse may seem brief, it provides your veterinarian with information of the overall function of your horse’s body systems. For healthy adult horses, these examinations are often performed at the time of their annual vaccine boosters. We also recommend examinations for geriatric horses, foals, and mares prior to breeding.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
It wasn’t too long ago, rotational deworming was recommended to reduce parasite resistance. But recent studies have shown that deworming based on fecal egg counts (FEC) and shedding density is preferred to reduce parasite burden. We offer FEC testing to our clients and give recommendations for deworming each horse based on the results.

Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
We are able to house a limited number of horses that require quarantine for health reasons. The most common cases we see for this are diarrhea, fever, and respiratory disease. Our Isolation facility allows us to provide the neccessary care to treat these patients while minimizing the risk of spreading contagious diseases.
Injury Treatment
Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy: Shockwaves are high energy acoustic waves with high amplitude. Shockwave increases blood supply to affected areas and promotes linear pattern of healing in tendons and ligaments. It also decreases pain via incomplete analgesia. We find it most effective when we combine shockwave therapy with other treatments such as PRP. Common injuries treated successfully with extracorporeal shockwave: tendonitis, muscle strains, chronic wounds, ringbone, suspensory desmitis, kissing spine, navicular pain, and tendon avulsions. Our shockwave therapy usually consists of 3 treatments 2 weeks apart.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
IRAP(Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein): IRAP is ACS(autologous-conditioned serum) and is harvested from the horse's own blood. IRAP is used to treat osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions in the joint. IL-1 (interleukin 1) is a cytokine and an inflammatory mediator and binds to the membrane on cartilage in joints and starts the inflammation cascade leading to inflammation, joint pain, and cartilage destruction. IL-1Ra (interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein) attaches to the receptor on the cartilage membrane blocking IL-1 from binding and causing inflammation in the joint. IRAP takes the horse's own blood and processes it in a way that the amount of IL-1Ra is amplified in the serum. The serum is frozen and can be injected into the horse's joint at any time. From one blood pull on a horse we get about 20mLs of IRAP serum to inject into joints. For osteoarthritis cases we recommend a series of IRAP to be injected once weekly for 3 weeks.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment

It is a dual-device system that combines a concentrated solution of cells, platelets, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins. Kidney Disease Treatment

Wound and Fracture Care
Some cases require more treatments than the farm can reasonably provide at the farm. Our clinic is staffed 24 hours a day to provide around the clock care for patients and provide the added benefit of daily observation by one or more veterinarians. Such cases include eye cases with treatments every 2 hours even through the night, patients on IV fluids, and wound care.

Laboratory Services
Southern Equine Service's in-house laboratory is equipped with blood work machines to run baseline blood work including count blood cell counts, serum chemistries,and fibrinogen. We are also able to collect and send out a variety of other dianostic samples including but not limited to ACTH testing (for Cushing's), biospies, cultures, and hormone testing.
X-Ray
We have digital radiograph (x-ray) machines so that we can quickly diagnose any bone injuries. Radiographs image bone and show any abnormalities in the bone such as bone spurs (osteophytes), dense bone (sclerosis), softer bone (lysis) and allow the joint spaces to be evaluated. All our machines are portable so we can take radiographs at our clinic or at your barn.
