The city of Tampa is located on Florida's west coast, on the Gulf of Mexico. The city enjoys a temperate climate, and has some of the best beaches in the country.

Back in the late 1800s, Tampa's economy was buoyed by cigar manufacturing - a trade with humble beginnings in a small business that was first started by Don Vicente Martinez Ybor who came to Tampa's Ybor City by way of his native Spain, Cuba and later, Key West, to open his cigar factory.

Today, the backbone of Tampa's economy is tourism. Other industries and services that drive the area's economy include biomedical manufacturing, brewing, citrus canning, electrical equipment, finance, government, paint production, phosphate mining, and transportation.

Where to Go in Tampa

Tampa is a culturally diverse city with neighborhoods that reflect the vibrant mix of residents who live here. This mix is also reflected in the city's many cultural and entertainment venues as well.

Tampa Bay's Channel District, or Channelside as it is called, is a great place to experience Tampa arts, culture and nightlife.

The University of Tampa is located near an area of town known as Hyde Park. Here is where you'll find Tampa's own SoHo - South Howard Avenue - and Hyde Park Village, another enclave of arts and culture.

Tampa is also quite family friendly. Kids of all ages will enjoy the sea life on display at the Florida Aquarium, also in Channelside, while the Museum of Science and Industry in North Tampa wows visitors with an amazing array of hands-on exhibits.

Another popular North Tampa attraction is the venerable Busch Gardens. The Africa-themed park features everything from a zoo to roller coasters. And Busch Gardens Adventure Island is right next door, offering a day of splashing and soaking in Tampa's own water park.
