Omaha Quick Guide
Sprouting on the Missouri River, past the vast cornfields of eastern Nebraska, Omaha is the state's largest city.
Beyond a history of being a serious, steak-and-rail town as a major transportation and livestock hub for the Great Plains, Omaha has grown to be truly metropolitan, with ongoing revitalization of its downtown and neighborhoods. There's much more to Omaha than corn and cowboys.
The city is home to the University of Nebraska and thousands of die-hard Huskers, as well as the headquarters for Berkshire Hathaway, Union Pacific and ConAgra Foods. Among famous Omaha natives are American icons Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando and President Gerald R. Ford.
For information on city offices and departments, call (402) 444-7000 or visit Omaha City Hall, located at 1819 Farnam St. (Map).

Where to Go in Omaha
Discover the livelier side of Omaha in the historic Old Market, which houses many popular restaurants, pubs, unique shops, galleries and theaters. The eclectic district covers 12 square city blocks, stretching from Harney Street to Jackson Street and 10th Street to 13th Street (Map).
Before you go home, try some serious steak. Omaha has long been smack dab in the heart of cattle country, so it boasts a number of renowned steakhouses. Sate your protein cravings, then test for yourself if the local axiom is true: "The bigger the cow on the roof, the better the steak."
Things to Do in Omaha
During the second week of June, join tens of thousands of Nebraskans, along with thousands more Iowans who shuffle in from across the Missouri, for three days of feasting at the Taste of Omaha in the city's main greenscape, Heartland of America Park (Map). More info: (402) 346-8003.
For more western flare with a kick of quirk, those who are country at heart should enjoy the annual River City Roundup and Rodeo, which Omaha hosts the last week of September. Aside from plenty of bull-riding and bronco-busting, see barbecue cook-offs and even a sticky note contest, where companies compete to make the most imaginative mural out of the ubiquitous, yet artistically neglected, office-supply medium. More info: (402) 554-9600.
For everyday entertainment: movie theaters, ticket sellers, night clubs, restaurants, museums, golf courses
